Group 3 elements have 3 valence electrons. Group 3 elements can react by losing 3 electrons. When the 3 electrons are lost, a full shell of 8 electrons is exposed, creating more stable conditions. Elements which fall into group 3, are said to be part of the boron group. Members of the boron group include:
- Boron
- Aluminium
- Gallium
- Indium
- Thallium
Apart from boron, the rest of the group 3 elements are poor metals. This means that they are softer, have a lower melting point and are less conductive than the transition metals. An example of the poor metal properties can be seen below with the gallium spoon experiment.
